Hello and welcome to Back Alley Media.

“They’re attacking me because I’m white”

She said some offensive stuff before, but in her interview today, Geraldine Ferraro really crossed a line. Her comments tear open old charges and counter-charges about race that never lead to anything productive. On top of that, she asserted that “Sexism is a bigger problem” than racism, a claim that revisits rivalries between the civil rights movement and the women’s rights movement that didn’t need to be revisited in this campaign. I don’t think she’s a racist but, as Roland Martin said on CNN this evening, these are race-based attacks. The whole subject of weighing quantity and quality of grievance is very damaging for the Democratic Party.

Lots of mixed feelings watching the video… but based on the one time I saw it, she’s obviously speaking off of her own script, and not at the direction of the campaign (I know that’s not what you’re suggesting, but others definitely are…)

It is telling, however, that the Clintons really seem hamstrung with what to do with the loose cannon, almost in a Bushian sort of way.
